Examples

Each example sends the same conversation both ways: to POST /v1/scan, and as an OpenAI chat completion to POST /v1/chat/completions. The responses are real answers from nam-shub, with their volatile fields (id, created, system_fingerprint) normalised. Each key scans with its organization’s detection settings, so your answers can differ. A chat completion’s assistant message is the verdict as a JSON string; it is shown decoded below the completion.

A single user message tries to override the assistant’s instructions and make it reveal its system prompt: the textbook prompt injection, an instruction to disregard everything set before it.

Injection hidden behind two layers of encoding

Section titled “Injection hidden behind two layers of encoding”

The user message passes the injection off as a booking reference. The instruction to ignore what came before and reveal the system prompt is base64-encoded, then encoded again, so no keyword survives in the text sent. Encoding does not hide it: nam-shub still finds the instruction.

The system prompt, the user’s request and the agent’s tool call are all benign. The injection arrives in the data a tool returns: a tracker issue whose body hides an instruction to send a file to the attacker. This is the indirect form: the attacker never talks to the model, they plant text where the agent will read it.

Here the danger is the agent’s own action, not its input. The user’s request is ordinary, but the shell command the agent chose pipes a remote script into a shell and dumps every Kubernetes secret. The tool call is scanned as a part of its own, so what the agent is about to run is judged before it runs.

No single turn is damning. The agent acknowledges in its reasoning that an action is outside its authorised scope, then, a turn later, sets up a command-and-control channel that polls a public repository for instructions. The attack is the drift between the stated boundary and the action taken.
